About the University Research and Education Programs Database

The Hydrogen and Fuel Cell University Research and Education Programs Database is a comprehensive catalog of U.S. college and university programs that offer courses and/or conduct research on hydrogen and fuel cells. The database includes information about research departments, programs, centers, and laboratories, as well as information on courses offered, and individual staff or faculty members.

The database was built using information from resources published by schools, both in print and on the Web. Additional data was compiled from a review of literature, including books, textbooks, conference proceedings, handbooks, industry- and research-related overviews, and government reports. In order to validate and keep the information up-to-date, program directors and researchers are encouraged to update and revise their professional information and information about their programs.

We encourage you to contact User Services to resolve any problems or to make suggestions.


Logging in and Registering

If you have been issued a user ID and password, you can log in by clicking "Edit" in the left side navigation and then clicking "Login" under the instructions for registered users. If you have forgotten your password, click "I forgot my password" to request a new one. You will then receive an email with instructions on how to change the password. If you have also forgotten your user ID, you will need to contact Elzbieta Tworek for additional assistance.

Research staff and faculty are encouraged to register so they can update and maintain their own database records. You may begin the registration process by clicking "Register" on the Registration page and filling out the registration form (you can get to the Registration page by clicking "Edit" in the left-hand navigation). Once your registration has been approved, you will receive an e-mail with log-in information.


Searching for a Program

You can search for a program of interest based on

Institution Name

To search by institution name:

  • Click on "Search by Institution" on the left navigation bar. A pull-down menu will be displayed that contains the names of all institutions within the database.
  • Select the institution to which the department, program, center, or laboratory belongs. For example, if you would like to view information on the National Fuel Cell Research Council, select "University of California, Irvine" from the pull-down menu. A page will be displayed showing all entities in the database listed under the selected institution.
  • Click "Show Details" next to the desired program. The detail information for the selected program will be displayed.

State

To search by state:

  • Click on "Search by State" on the left navigation bar. A map of the United States will be displayed.
  • Click on the state in which the institution or program is located. A page will be displayed listing all hydrogen and fuel cell institutions (listed in the database) in the state.
  • Select the desired program. The detail information for the selected program will be displayed.

Research Topic

To search by research topic:

  • Click on "Search by Research Topic" on the left navigation bar. A page of research topics will be displayed.
  • You can base your search on research topics of interest to the program or of interest to researchers within the program. Select "Education Programs" or "Researchers" from the pull-down menu.
  • Select the research topics on which you would like to search.
  • Click the "Search" button. A page will be displayed showing all programs that
  • Select the desired program. The detail information for the selected program will be displayed.

Searching for a Researcher

To search for a hydrogen or fuel cell researcher:

  • Click "Search for Researchers" on the left navigation bar. A page will be displayed allowing you to search by one of two methods:
    • Enter Name Keyword: Enter a few letters of the last name of the researcher.
    • Select from a List: Select the name of the researcher from the pull-down menu.
  • Click the "Submit" button. A page will be displayed showing the researcher's contact information, programs under which he/she is listed in the database, his/her topics or research, and a description of his/her research.

Adding an Institution or Program

In order to provide security, only the database administrator can add or remove programs and institutions from the database. If you believe a program should be added or removed from the database, please contact Elzbieta Tworek for additional assistance.


Modifying Program Information

By default, any registered user listed as a researcher for an institution may modify the program records attached to that institution. To modify a program's basic information, follow the steps below:

  • Log in.
  • Select the program record which you wish to modify using either the "Search by Institution", "Search by State", or "Search by Topic" tool. (If the program is not listed, please see Adding a Program or Institution below.)
  • Click the pencil icon (pencil) or "Edit this Page" at the top of the page.
  • Click on the pencil icon beside the program name. The "Program Contact Information" page will be displayed, listing the current base information for the program.
  • Edit the information that needs to be changed.
  • Click the "Submit" button. A new page will be displayed with the newly updated information.

Managing Program Researchers

Anyone with permission to modify a program record may add or remove a researcher from the list of research staff under that program.

To manage researcher entries:

  • Log in.
  • Select the program record which you wish to modify using either the "Search by Institution", "Search by State", or "Search by Topic" tool. (If the program is not listed, please see Adding a Program or Institution below.)
  • Click the pencil icon (pencil) or "Edit this Page" at the top of the page.
  • Click on the pencil icon beside "Faculty or Research Staff." A page will be displayed that lists the names of all persons in the database associated with the program, along with utilities allowing you to perform the following operations:

Edit

To edit information for a researcher:

  • Select the researcher from the list at the top of the page and click the "Edit" button. A new page will be displayed showing the selected researcher's current information.
  • Click the pencil icon next to the information you wish to edit. A new page will be displayed showing the current values for the information you chose to edit.
  • Edit the desired information
  • Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the page. The researcher's information page will then be displayed with the updated information.
  • If you would like to edit another aspect of the researcher's profile, click the pencil icon next to that area and continue with the same steps as above.

Remove

To remove a researcher from an organization's staff list:

  • Select the researcher from the list at the top of the page and click the "Remove" button. A new page will be displayed with a message statiung that the selected researcher has been removed from the program.
  • Click the "Continue" button to return to the program information page.

Note: This process only removes the researcher from the selected program's staff list, it does not remove the researcher's profile from the entire database. To remove a researcher completely, please contact Elzbieta Tworek.

Add

If a profile for the researcher does not yet exist in the database, it must be created before the researcher can be added to the organization's staff list. If the researcher does have a profile in the database, follow the steps below to add him/her to the staff list:

  • Click the "Add" Button. A new page will be displayed with a list menu containing the names of researchers currently in the database.
  • Select the researcher from the list menu.
  • Click the "Attache selected researcher to this program" button. A new page will be displayed stating that the selected researcher has been attached.
  • Click the "Continue" button to return to the main edit page for the organization. The new researcher will be listed among the staff.

Create

To create a researcher profile:

  • Click the "Create" button. A new page will be displayed for you to enter new researcher contact information.
  • Enter the researcher's first and last names (these fields are required) along with any other contact information. Note that some of the information is entered automatically. Edit or delete this default information if appropriate.
  • Click the "Save" button. The profile information for the researcher will then be displayed.
  • You can then edit any of the information in the researcher's profile by clicking the pencil icon and following the steps for editing researcher information.
  • To attach the researcher to an organization in the database, follow the steps for adding a researcher to an organization.

Managing Program Courses

Any registered user listed as a researcher for an institution may modify the program records attached to that institution. To modify a program's list of researchers:

  • Log in.
  • Select the program record which you wish to modify using either the "Search by Institution", "Search by State", or "Search by Topic" tool. (If the program is not listed, please see Adding a Program or Institution below.)
  • Click the pencil icon (pencil) or "Edit this Page" at the top of the page.
  • Click on the pencil icon beside "Courses." A page will be displayed that lists the names of all courses in the database associated with the program, along with utilities allowing you to perform the following operations:

Edit

To edit course information:

  • Select the course to be changed from the list at the top of the page.
  • Click the "Edit" button. The "Program Course Information" page will be displayed, listing the current information for the course.
  • Edit the course information.
  • Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the screen. You will be taken back to the list of courses for that program.

Delete

To delete a course from a program:

  • Select the course to be deleted from the list at the top of the page.
  • Click the "Delete" button.
  • The course will be immediately deleted from the list at the top of the page and the database.

Add

To add a course to a program:

  • Click the "Add" button. The "Program Course Information" page will be displayed.
  • Complete the form on the page.
  • Click the "Save" button. You will be taken back to the list of courses for the program, with the new course added to the list.

Modifying Program Research Topics

Anyone with permission to modify a program record may modify the list of research topics for that program. To modify a program's research topics, follow the steps below:

  • Log in.
  • Select the program record which you wish to modify using either the "Search by Institution", "Search by State", or "Search by Topic" tool. (If the program is not listed, please see Adding a Program or Institution below.)
  • Click the pencil icon (pencil) or "Edit this Page" at the top of the page.
  • Click on the pencil icon beside "Research Topics." The "Research Topic Information" page will be displayed. Topics assigned to the program will appear with a check mark in the box next to them, unselected topics will be unchecked.
  • Select or de-select topics by clicking on the checkbox.
  • Click the "Save" button. The program information will be displayed with the newly modified topic information.

Modifying Program Research Description

Anyone with permission to modify a program record may modify the research description for that program. To modify a program's research description, follow the steps below:

  • Log in.
  • Select the program record which you wish to modify using either the "Search by Institution", "Search by State", or "Search by Topic" tool. (If the program is not listed, please see Adding a Program or Institution below.)
  • Click the pencil icon (pencil) or "Edit this Page" at the top of the page.
  • Click on the pencil icon beside "Research Description." The "Update Research Description" page will be displayed. The current description will appear in a text box.
  • Edit the text as necessary.
  • Click the "Save" button. The program information will be displayed with the newly modified description.

Registered researchers listed under an institution can edit information for any researcher belonging to the same institution. To modify researcher contact information:

  • Log in.
  • Search for the desired researcher's profile.
  • Click "Edit this record" at the top of the page. A new page will be displayed allowing you to edit information.
  • Click the pencil icon next to the researcher's contact information. A new page will be displayed showing the current values for the information you chose to edit.
  • Edit the desired information.
  • Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the page. The researcher's information page will then be displayed with the updated information.

Modifying Researcher Research Programs

Registered researchers listed under an institution can edit information for any researcher belonging to the same institution. To modify researcher research program information:

  • Log in.
  • Search for the desired researcher's profile.
  • Click "Edit this record" at the top of the page. A new page will be displayed allowing you to edit information.
  • Click on the pencil icon beside the programs with which the researcher is involved. A page will be displayed showing the programs to which the researcher belongs.
  • Click the desired program. A page will be displayed, allowing you to edit information on the researcher's program.

Modifying Researcher Research Topics

Registered researchers listed under an institution can edit information for any researcher belonging to the same institution. To modify researcher research topic information:

  • Log in.
  • Search for the desired researcher's profile.
  • Click "Edit this record" at the top of the page. A new page will be displayed allowing you to edit information.
  • Click on the pencil icon beside "Research Topics." The "Research Topic Information" page will be displayed. Topics assigned to the researcher will appear with a check mark in the box next to them, unselected topics will be unchecked.
  • Select or de-select topics by clicking on the checkbox.
  • Click the "Save" button. The researcher information will be displayed with the newly modified topic information.

 


Modifying Researcher Research Description

Registered researchers listed under an institution can edit information for any researcher belonging to the same institution. To modify researcher research description information:

  • Log in.
  • Search for the desired researcher's profile.
  • Click "Edit this record" at the top of the page. A new page will be displayed allowing you to edit information.
  • Click on the pencil icon beside "Research Description." The "Update Research Description" page will be displayed. The current description will appear in a text box.
  • Edit the text as necessary.
  • Click the "Save" button. The program information will be displayed with the newly modified description.
