EPA Fuel Economy Label

Gasoline Vehicles

New EPA Fuel Economy Label for Gasoline Vehicles

Fuel Economy

In addition to the MPG estimates displayed on previous labels, combined city/highway fuel use is also given in terms of gallons per 100 miles.

Fuel Economy & Greenhouse Gas Rating

Use this scale to compare vehicles based on tailpipe greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change.

Smog Rating

You can now compare vehicles based on tailpipe emissions of smog-forming air pollutants.

Five-Year Fuel Savings

This compares the five-year fuel cost of the vehicle to that of an average gasoline vehicle. The assumptions used to calculate these costs are listed at the bottom of the label.

Annual Fuel Cost

This cost is based on the combined city/highway MPG estimate and assumptions about driving and fuel prices listed at the bottom of the label. You can get personalized estimates at fueleconomy.gov/m.

Electric Vehicles

New EPA Fuel Economy Label for Electric Vehicles

Fuel Economy

Electric vehicle fuel economy is given in two metrics:

  1. Miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent (MPGe) to help you compare to gasoline vehicles
  2. Kilowatt-hours per 100 miles to help you estimate fuel costs

Driving Range

Driving range is an estimate of the distance the vehicle can travel on a full battery. Please note that fuel economy and range for electric vehicles can vary significantly based on driving conditions and driving style.

Fuel Economy & Greenhouse Gas Rating

Greenhouse gases contribute to climate change. Electric vehicles emit no tailpipe greenhouse gases, but emissions may be generated at the electric power plant. This rating does not include "upstream” emissions.

Smog Rating

Electric vehicles emit no tailpipe smog-forming emissions, but emissions may be generated at the electric power plant. This rating does not include "upstream” emissions.

Five-Year Fuel Savings

This compares the five-year fuel cost of the vehicle to that of an average gasoline vehicle. The assumptions used to calculate these costs are listed at the bottom of the label.

Annual Fuel Cost

This cost is based on the combined city/highway fuel economy estimate and the driving and fuel price assumptions listed at the bottom of the label. You can get personalized estimates at fueleconomy.gov/m.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles

New EPA Fuel Economy Label for Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles

Fuel Economy

Plug-in hybrid estimates are for combined city/highway driving only, and separate estimates are provided for all-electric and gasoline-only operation. All-electric fuel economy is given in two metrics:

  1. Miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent (MPGe) to help you compare to gasoline vehicles
  2. Kilowatt-hours per 100 miles to help you estimate fuel costs

Driving Range

Driving range estimates are provided for all-electric operation and total distance on a full battery and full tank of gasoline. Please note that fuel economy and range in electric mode can vary significantly based on driving conditions and driving style.

Fuel Economy & Greenhouse Gas Rating

Greenhouse gases contribute to climate change. Plug-in hbyrids emit no tailpipe greenhouse gases when operating on electricity only, but emissions may be generated at the electric power plant. This rating does not include "upstream” emissions.

Smog Rating

Plug-in hybrids emit no smog-forming emissions directly when running on electricity only, but emissions may be generated at the electric power plant. This rating does not include "upstream” emissions.

Five-Year Fuel Savings

This compares the five-year fuel cost of the vehicle to that of an average gasoline vehicle. The assumptions used to calculate these costs are listed at the bottom of the label.

Annual Fuel Cost

This cost is based on a combination of electric and gasoline operation along with the driving and fuel price assumptions listed at the bottom of the label. You can get personalized estimates at fueleconomy.gov/m.
